Facebook Messenger is now adding new features for end-to-end encryption for chats and calls. “New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message. We’re also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats too.” according to Meta‘s CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
For the past 8 years, Facebook Messenger’s default chats aren’t been end-to-end encrypted which means users have to turn on this feature i.e. you can choose secure chat or toggle the lock icon when starting a new chat.
The encrypted chats will feature new functions such as stickers, GIFs, reactions, long-press replies, and forward messages. The encrypted chats will also support verified badges identification. And interestingly, it will be supporting a screenshot notification if you’re in an end-to-end encrypted chat, this feature will let the other user be notified when a screenshot has been taken.
These updates seem to pave the way for greater improvements by 2023 in which Meta plans to make all chats encrypted for integrated Instagram and Messenger messages.
We love Meta’s move to a secure platform for Facebook Messenger, which they’ve already implemented for WhatsApp. Looking forward to encrypted messages across all its apps. Just a simple tip, if you still want to keep a screenshot of your conversations without letting the other end know, you can grab your other phone to snap a photo.
