Zooming six times the speed of sound or you can easily convert that in approximately 4,200 miles per hour, 70 miles per minute –the SR-72 unmanned plane is no doubt the world’s fastest that could lead the military air strike by 2030.
According to Lockheed Martin who designed the aircraft told Mashable, the SR-72 at its speed can target and strike enemies across any continent in less than an hour so basically there will be no time for enemies to take cover from its hypersonic missiles. However, this futuristic unmanned assault plane remains on planning stage and will not be in the fleet of the U.S. Air Force until 2030, The development phase will start with the hypersonic missile aimed to be tested as early 2018 then a prototype flight of the single-engine, less powerful version of the plane in the next five years after.
Lockheed Martin and Aerojet Rocketdyne has teamed up to create a hybrid engine that was designed to produce extreme power to sustain the aircraft to cruise six times the speed of sound. And this kind of hybrid engine that will use a “turbine when it’s not going too fast, and a supersonic combustion ramjet when it’s ready to move.”
“Speed is the next aviation advancement to counter emerging threats in the next several decades,” Leland said. “The technology would be a game-changer in theater, similar to how stealth is changing the battlespace today.”
