The Suzuki Vitara DDiS 1.9 is the best model in the range, but can it compete with major rivals such as the Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Tucson. We compare all three of these used off-roaders to see where you could be splashing the cash.
Design
Suzuki cars are usually quite poorly designed with cheap interiors, but the latest Vitara suggests that is in the past. The cabin has a stylish interior with big and bold switches on the dash. The steering wheel is adjustable, but only height, rather than in and out too. Overall, it’s fairly well designed with a smart exterior.
The Outlander has a reasonable finish, but it does seem a little a plasticky upon closer inspection. The driving position is comfortable, but the passengers do draw the short straw due to the cramped interior.
In comparison to its two rivals, the Hyundai Tucson fares quite well. With a large boot and sliding rear seats, it’s a practical option for families too. The bargain price does mean some comprises though, as the steering wheel doesn’t adjust and the plastic interior feels a little cheap.
Performance
Suzuki’s Vitara DDiS 1.9 is impressive off-road. In fact, it’s more than impressive, but the road performance is below par. This diesel model definitely has the best pulling power, but the gearbox is a little clunky. However, the Vitara manages to handle corners better than any older models thanks to firmer suspension.
The Mitsubishi Outlander may be a lightweight and convenient size, but those benefits are written off because of its poor off-road capability. This 4WD also has awkward gearing, meaning that you are constantly having to move up and down and suffer with uneven power delivery.
Almost the complete opposite of the Suzuki Vitara, the Hyundai Tucson’s wheels definitely belong on the tarmac. Despite being four-wheel drive, it struggles to cope with rougher terrains and does get a little noisy when travelling at high speeds. However, on the road, this 4×4 handles corners well and boasts firm suspension.
