The 2014 Chevrolet SS was unveiled last week at the Daytona International Speedway. The event marks GM’s return to rear-wheel drive performance sedans after 17 long years of absence. As Mark Reuss, GM North America president, puts it, ““The Chevrolet brand was largely built on the strength of rear-drive performance sedans, yet it’s been 17 years since we offered one. The all-new SS fills that void and fills it better than any other vehicle in the brand’s rich history.”
The latest SS packs a similar 415-hp, 6.2-liter, LS3 eight-cylinder engine as the 2013 Corvette, enabling it to sprint from zero to 60mph in five seconds. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to enable manual shifting, in a way.
The new SS is the American version of the new Holden SS V and is built around General Motor’s global platform being used by the Camaro and the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle. The suspension includes MacPherson struts in the front and a trapezoidal multilink arrangement at the rear. Its steering features electronic power assistance while the forged 19-inch alloy wheels house 335-mm Brembo discs with two-piece, four-piston calipers at the front.
The 2014 Chevrolet SS will go on sale in the 4Q of 2013. Prices will be announced near its launch date. Standard to the vehicle are: eight-way power adjustable front bucket seats, leather upholstery, center-console mounted touch screen for the MyLink and navigation systems, Bose nine-speaker audio system, color head-up display (HUD) and push-button start.
The 2014 SS is also replacing the Impala as GM’s official NASCAR vehicle starting this year. The Chevrolet Impala has been in the NASCAR circuit since 2007 when it replaced the Monte Carlo.
