EA has acquired PopCap Games that is priced for $650 million plus $100 million stock and a multi-year earn-out amounting as much as $1.3 billion. The acquisition will badly help EA break into mobile and social gaming platform that is far from their decent rank on the console gaming category. How sure the gaming giant can leverage on PopCap Games? PopCap Games is the creator of popular games like Plants vs Zombies, Zuma and Bejeweled and the company have dished out 150 million installations worldwide. PopCap also generated approximately 80 percent of its revenue was on its digital platform last year.
“PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA’s global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels.” according to EA CEO John Riccitiello.
Though we have also seen some EA titles that was brought into portable gaming and succeed, the acquisition host a spot for casual gamers aimed to compete with social and mobile casual gamers. So now, watch out Zynga, Rovio and others for a very ‘electrifying’ games coming from EA and PopCap.
