If there’s one notable aspect that Android smartphones are behind from their Apple counterparts, it’s that the display is limited to the usual 800×480 or WVGA. But Sharp begged to differ as it announced the IS03 for the Japanese carrier KDDI, for a November release. Boasting a display resolution of 960×640 for use in its 3.5-inch touchscreen, the IS03 display matches quality on par with the iPhone‘s “Retina Display”. More after the cut.
If that doesn’t catch your attention maybe the specs will. The iS03 also features a 9.6 megapixel auto-focus camera with flash as well as image stabilization. For functionality, the IS03 has EVDO Rev.A, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS, one-seg TV tuner, GPS, FM transmitter and the Osaifu-Keitai which enables one to use it as an electronic wallet for your mobile payments.
Powering the handset is a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with 512MB RAM. Expansion options include a 2GB microSD card in the package which supports up to 32GB. It will come next month in three colors: white, black and orange although it is still unknown if these will ever reach US shores.
UPDATE: Coming from CEATEC 2010 @ Tokyo, here’s a video showing the IS03 hands on!
