Here comes Altec Lansing’s Octiv Duo iPhone-iPod charging and speaker dual-dock system with its compact simplicity and styling, doubling the size as well as the price of earlier Octiv Mini ($49.99), but yet looking affordable at $99.
Simplicity is the key hype of this speaker system, eliminating few redundant extras like LCD for the clock, an AM/FM radio, or fancy alarm systems that all can be found on your iPod or iPhone. But instead, Altec brings two free apps to utilize the usability of the speaker dock: Alarm Rock and Music Mix; both installed automatically when you first dock your iPhone or iTouch on the device.
If you’re taking everything to be simple, let’s see if Octiv Duo can hand you that simplicity in taking your daily needs of charging, listening and waking up timely every morning.

The good: Dual docks for two iPods or iPhones; compact, elegant design; decent sound for small size; two free apps deliver full alarm clock and dual iPod mixing functionality; electromagnetically-shielded so iPhone to be used without switching to airplane mode; USB port for charging other portable devices; included remote control magnetically attaches to the back of the speaker. The bad: Take away the iPhone apps and the Octiv Duo is a fairly basic iPod speaker; app doesn’t automatically launch when you dock your device; circular remote control takes some getting used to.The bottom line: If you’re looking for a compact, affordable speaker for your bedside table that charges two iPhone or iPods simultaneously, the Octiv Duo is well designed and offers reasonably good sound for the money.
