Samsung may be the biggest mobile phone manufacturer to have originated in Korea, but they are by no means the only one with Korean-based LG Mobile now being the fourth largest mobile phone producer in the world.
LG was first founded in 1958 when two Korean technical companies merged. The companies were called Lucky and Goldstar, who took the first letter of each of their names to become known as LG. They started out selling all kinds of electronic goods including TV’s and radios, as well as white goods and home appliances.
An electronics arm of the company was set up in 1995, known as LG Electronics, and a separate mobile division was set up in 1996 specialising in the development of mobile phones and invested heavily in developing 3G technology.
LG’s mobile division were the first to develop WCDMA video calling for a mobile, which was a first in 3G technology and was unveiled in 2002. LG handsets now tend to be known by one world names including the hugely popular LG Chocolate as well as the Shine, Renoir and Viewty and they have developed a very user friendly interface which is popular the world over.
Moving into the realm of smartphones, LG has delved into using other operating systems rather than their own, including Window’s Mobile and Google’s Android in order to appeal to a wider range of people. LG have also experimented with the design of their phones featuring flip, slide and even swivel designs. Quirky designs like the LG Shine showcased technology that saw the screen doubling up as a mirror when the phone is off. Newer phones like the LG Pop also feature full touchscreen technology.
LG have also moved on to develop their mobile phones into more than just a phone and most now feature high resolution cameras, music players, document viewers and massive storage capacities with high speed internet. LG have also partnered up with designer names like Prada to make their phones socially desirable and sought after in the mobile phone market.
Today, LG are one of the main contenders in the mobile phone market as well as pioneering some of the world’s largest plasma screen TV’s and liquid crystal displays.
