Sony confirmed UMD-free Patapon 2 –hint for UMD-free PSP 2

Sony Patapon 2 UMD free

Are we talking of a big bold step for Sony in their portable gaming device by releasing a UMD-free PSP? The story have been luring around February with David Perry’s reports on PSP 2 without a UMD drive which has been followed-up by GameDaily who supports Perry’s statement which shows a fully digital PSP. The confirmation of UMD-free Patapon 2 maybe the big hint of Sony’s major update on PSP.

Sony has just confirmed the story with a statement to Ars Technica:

“We’re considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content,” Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA said. “The downloadable game will be available on May 5th at both retail and via the PlayStation Store. We remain focused on providing superior games and entertainment experiences in both the UMD and digital formats and are working closely with our partners to deliver the best PSP line up in our history.”

Sony puts a wise-gamble on Patapon 2 which seems to have firm stands on portable gaming fans, which means securing a substantial test for the new system. If this Sony’s moves have gone far, we’re looking at the first step in moving to a more digital future.

Although the Patapon 2 confirmation serves an evidence, UMD-free PSP remains a rumor, until the day it’s officially released by Sony. Still, we will be watching on this interesting story.
